One of the reasons why he was able to reach the end of the story in the seventh book. He needed to ward off useless thoughts to be able to proceed in defeating the Dark Lord. He needed to defeat every dingle dementor that would come his way, because he cannot at any single fleeting moment, fail.
And I have to think of happy thoughts... Not just happy thoughts, but optimistic thoughts to get through.
